Selling art, not copies

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

When hearing that we don’t require ownership or rights to artists music in order to assist them, people ask, ” As a label, how can you help sell copies of an artists music if you don’t own their copyright?”

The answer is because in the new music business, we don’t have to.
The idea of selling ‘copies of music’ is out like Bush!
If your at all following recent trends in our society, you know that there is a growing movement towards the idea of selling art, not copies of it.
Crosbie Fitch says it best here.

What this means is there are many ways to earn income from music. Selling copies is quickly losing popularity as the primary method. So if your only selling CD’s to earn income, your going to be left behind in the dark ages. There is a very good chance that in 2009, very few retailers will carry CD’s anymore, including the largest, Wall Mart. Sure CD’s will still be popular for some time, but they are on the way out. That is common knowledge fact now.

Pro Soul assists artists in finding various ways to earn income, using the latest and most innovative ideas that have been shown to reflect the interests of the music lover. And many music fans want to support the artist directly for what they do. So we lay the foundation, and then get out of the way as far as the music lover is concerned. Fresh thinking for a changing industry, an evolving world.

Warner pulls music from youtube

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

There seems to be no end to the resistance major record labels have to the changes in the way people want to listen to and consume music.

Today was a classic example, as Warner music refused to come to an agreement with YouTube in how they should be compensated for the streaming of their videos, pulling all their videos from the service. This is despite Universal Music already earning tens of millions from YouTube.

Do artists signed to Warner know how much money they are losing from being banned from the most popular source for music videos in the world? Do they know MTV doesn’t play music videos much anymore? Probably not, and they have no choice anyway as long as they are under contract with Warner.
Just another example of how traditional music industry doesn’t get the potential of new ways of earning income, and building an audience.

Our attitude is that it’s career suicide to turn down any potential way of earning income in the new music business just because you don’t feel it is enough. Especially if that income is likely to increase in the future, and will help bring in new fans, and encourage fans to promote you, something that is huge on YouTube.

What do you think?

“I have no time and no money; how can I be successful?”

Friday, December 19th, 2008

I hear this a lot from artists that have spent a fortune doing things uninformed artists do, following advice that dissociated ‘veterans’ in the music industry have recommended. Now they’re broke, discouraged, and disillusioned – and out of time and money. Even though they may read all this new information and theories about what they need to do to be successful, according to the new leaders of the business, they have neither the time to experiment with these things nor the money to take chances.

Because the music industry is in the process of a massive shift, and no one knows exactly what the future looks like, some of the information out there is indeed theoretical. But much of it has been proven to work.

Why else do you think that huge artists like Radiohead would ditch their record label and offer their music at ‘pay what you can’ prices? Because the new leaders in the music industry have been telling artists to do that for years! Many indie artists have experienced success doing these things, so others have since followed suit. And it works!

Here is one of many examples: Jonathan Coulton makes a living doing it himself

Unfortunately, as you may gather from this article, if you don’t have any time or any money, it is impossible to have any success in the music business. You either need to spend 6 to 8 hours a day – at least – doing what the new leaders and futurists in the music industry are telling artists that they need to do to become successful, or you need to spend some money to get assistance to do this. Ideally, you could afford both of these things.

That is where Pro Soul comes in. We’re the only full service company doing this, using the latest techniques that work rather than old fashioned ideas that are no longer effective.

Be honest with yourself; if you can’t do either of the above options, there is little hope for your music career. Once you address these issues, there is definitely a future for your talents!

The third “Dirty Little Secret of Music 2.0″

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Hypebot, the online authority on music, technology, and the new music business, recently posted their “4 Dirty Little Secrets of Music 2.0“.

And wouldn’t you know it – number 3 on their list: “You Can’t Do It Yourself”.

“There are not enough hours in the day to return emails from all of you Facebook friends, update your dates on Eventful, post new photos on Flickr, edit the expletives out of that backstage video before posting it on YouTube and still find the time to write songs, record them and then play them live. It takes a village to raise a child. It take a team to build a career. Start building one today.”

Not to toot our own horn (too much), but Pro Soul can do all this and so much more.

Instead of waiting to magically find more hours in your day to devote to your music career, we can take care of it all for you – so you can concentrate on being an artist.  While you work on your music, let us keep your audience engaged and ready for your next masterpiece.

Find out why Pro Soul is “music business, done better” here.  Start building your team today.
