We have suffered a great loss.
Singer, Performer, Writer, Model, Visionary, Emeline Fia Getejanc
touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with, and left
a lasting impression, not only with her magnetic personality, but
through her passionate, energetic music.
Upon deciding to pursue her music career professionally, and
training with opera, Emeline achieved almost instant success with
her powerful voice, her words, and her driving music, starting with
her collaboration with Pro Soul in 1991.
People couldn't get enough of her progressive music, her stunning
beauty, and charming personality. As a result, she was Labeled "Queen Of The
Smoke Machine" by Vancouver magazine in 1993, and was the first
independent dance artist to achieve gold status on the top local
radio station, who voted her most promising new artist for 3 years
in a row. Emeline went on to receive heavy rotation on radio across
the country, and pack the hottest clubs, perform at benefits, fashion
shows, and shopping malls, and open for the top pop/dance artists
to perform in Vancouver. Emeline was also featured on a number of
CD compilations with top international artists, and released her
own electronica fused pop album, 'Activate' in 1999.
But she learned quickly the frustrations of the music industry despite
her acclaim.
To further aggravate these frustrations, Emeline suffered a
number of adversities, causing her to have to completely change
her way of life. Over the years of trying to deal with these misfortunes
as best she could, Emeline was not able to continue her career in
music, which was even more disheartening.
Then, in 1997, every woman’s worst fear came true for Emeline.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer. Doctors told her an operation
was the only way, so she proceeded with the usual treatment, and
after months of suffering was given a clean bill of health.
Emeline felt she had a new beginning in life once she recovered,
and it was a very exciting, positive time for her. Pro Soul had
started a record label and made her an official partner in the company.
She felt a whole new world of opportunities for her music, and the
future was looking very bright for her career.
But in the fall of 2000, Emeline started getting chest pains. The
cancer had returned, this time in her lungs and later she would
find, her eye area and other parts of her body.
After months of extreme suffering while pursuing every modern treatment
available in international clinics, Emeline’s cancer started to
recede. Eventually, despite a few serious relapses, in the last
2 months, she was able to stay at home, without oxygen, or drugs,
and could consume small amounts of food normally. But over the last
week of June, her breathing got progressively worse, forcing her
to go to hospital, where, to the shock of all, she passed away on
6:15pm, June 30th, ,2001 at the young age of 31.
The loss of Emeline is tragic not only to her family and the
many people who knew and loved her, but to Pro Soul. As the first,
and most successful artist yet, and business partner, Emeline was
directly tied to the lifeblood of Pro Soul. She grew to understand
the process of music and the industry fluently, and was involved
in the words and the sounds that were used, and how things were
arranged in the music, major company decisions and direction, and
the image that was presented to the public. Emeline never put a
limit on her generosity and understanding when dealing with other
people. Self improvement and social responsibility were always very
important to her, and she always strived to educate herself in order
to better her understanding. In her selflessness, she never wanted
to trouble others with her problems.
The fact that Pro Soul exists today, and is a vehicle for other
artists is directly attributable to Emeline. The company will never
quite be the same without her, but her influence and contribution
will live on. When Pro Soul started in 1991 as a production company
to release her music, we never imagined it would become a world
class record company, but thanks to her selfless dedication, support,
and vision, Pro Soul will live on, along with her music, touching
peoples lives as she did in her own.
